Korespondencja Jana Dantyszka (łac. Ioannes Dantiscus, 1485-1548), urodzonego w Gdańsku, pochodzącego zaś z osiadłej od kilku pokoleń w Prusach dolnoniemieckiej rodziny von Höfen, sekretarza królewskiego i dyplomaty w służbie Zygmunta I i Bony Sforzy, a następnie biskupa chełmińskiego oraz warmińskiego, wybitnego poety nowołacińskiego i członka europejskiej respublica litteraria, należy do najobszerniejszych zbiorów tego rodzaju, jakie zachowały się z epoki wczesnonowożytnej. Wśród kilkuset korespondentów Dantyszka – władców i mężów stanu, dyplomatów, kupców i bankierów, uczonych i ludzi pióra – były postaci tak wybitne i słynne jak Erazm z Rotterdamu, Hernán Cortés czy Mikołaj Kopernik.

Niniejsza książka stanowi kolejny tom drukowanej serii Corpus Epistularum Ioannis Dantisci, przygotowywanej w ramach wieloletniego projektu „Rejestracja i publikacja korespondencji Jana Dantyszka (1485-1548)”, obejmującego również internetową edycję całej jego spuścizny piśmienniczej. Prezentuje różne aspekty "Respublica Litteraria w XVI wieku", materiały źródłowe rejestrujące to zjawisko, jego zasięg terytorialny i rolę w rozwoju kultury europejskiej.

W tomie znalazła się m.in. edycja i omówienie dwóch nowo odkrytych wierszy Jana Dantyszka oraz nieznanego dotąd wiersza Józefa Justusa Scaligera, a także rozważania nad autobiograficznym utworem "Vita Ioannis Dantisci" oraz elegią "Vaticinium ruiturae Poloniae", opublikowaną drukiem w XVIII wieku pod nazwiskiem Dantyszka, w rzeczywistości napisaną w roku 1579 podczas wojny króla Stefana Batorego z Gdańskiem. Książkę zamyka edycja krytyczna niepublikowanej nigdy drukiem oracji "Mercurina Gattinary", adresowanej do młodego Karola Habsburga, który w roku 1516 został królem Kastylii i Léonu oraz królem Aragonii.

The correspondence of Ioannes Dantiscus (1485-1548), coming from a burgher family in Gdańsk royal scribe and diplomat in the service of Sigismund I Jagiellon and Bona Sforza, Bishop of Kulm (Chełmno) and of Ermland (Warmia), Neo-Latin poet and member of the European respublica litteraria, is one of the largest early modern collections of this kind preserved until the present day. Among more than 650 Dantiscus’ correspondents – rulers, statesmen, diplomats, merchants, bankers, scholars and men of letters – there are such famous and outstanding personalities like Erasmus of Rotterdam, Hernán Cortés or Nicolaus Copernicus.

The present book is a subsequent volume of the printed series Corpus Epistularum Ioannis Dantisci, which is a part of a multi-year project „Registration and Publication of Ioannes Dantiscus’ Correspondence”, including also an on-line edition of his correspondence and other texts. She deal with various aspects of the "Respublica Litteraria in the sixteenth century", the source materials recording this phenomenon, its territorial extent and its role in the development of European culture.

The book includes i.al. discussion and edition of two newly discovered poems by Dantiscus and one poem by Joseph Justus Scaliger as well as reflections on Dantiscus’ autobiographical poem "Vita Ioannis Dantisci" and on the poem "Vaticinium ruiturae Poloniae" signed with the name of Dantiscus but, in fact, written in 1579 in the context of the war between the King of Poland Stephen Báthory and the city of Gdańsk. The volume concludes with a critical edition of Mercurino Arborio di Gattinara oration from 1516 (the moment when Charles Habsburg ascended to the Spanish throne), never before published in print. In it, Gattinara presents the idea of a new universal monarchy while also including many elements of self-apologia.
