W publikacji Owen Gingerich kontempluje wszechświat, w którym Bóg jest obecny – niezauważany przez naukę, ale przecież nie wykluczony przez nią. Autor odwołuje się przy tym do najnowszych osiągnięć astronomii i kosmologii, przytacza liczne anegdoty z dziejów nauki, komentuje poglądy ewolucjonistów i odnosi się do głośnego ostatnio ruchu Inteligentnego Projektu.

Ta głęboka, prowokacyjna i błyskotliwa książka jest świadectwem, że ten sam człowiek może być kreatywnym uczonym oraz osobą głęboko wierzącą w boską obecność we wszechświecie. Gingerich jest bowiem przekonany, że kosmos został stworzony z zamysłem oraz celem i że wiara ta nie koliduje z metodą naukową. Książka powstała na podstawie "Wykładów im. Williama Beldena Nobla", wygłoszonych przez Gingericha w listopadzie 2005 roku na Uniwersytecie Harvarda.

Gingerich sporo uwagi poświęca poszlakom przemawiającym za tym, że Wszechświat rzeczywiście jest dziełem Mądrego Stwórcy. Każda naukowa specjalność ma własną specyfikę. Gingerich jest astrofizykiem i historykiem nauki, dlatego szczególnie wyraźnie przemawiają do niego świat gwiazd i galaktyk, równania rządzące ich ruchami i niezwykła synchronizacja w ich warunkach początkowych. Owen Gingerich – astronom i historyk nauki, który swoje życie zawodowe na dziesięciolecia związał z Uniwersytetem Harvarda, światowej sławy badacz życia i dzieła Keplera i Kopernika. Członek Amerykańskiej Akademii Sztuk i Nauk, Amerykańskiego Towarzystwa Filozoficznego, Międzynarodowej Unii Astronomicznej, Królewskiego Towarzystwa Astronomicznego oraz wielu innych międzynarodowych i krajowych towarzystw naukowych. Polskiemu czytelnikowi znane są jego 2 książki, poświęcone Mikołajowi Kopernikowi: Książka, której nikt nie przeczytał (2004) i Mikołaj Kopernik. Gdy Ziemia stała się planetą (2005).

The work comprises thoughts on the relationships between the study of Universe and faith. It shows the universe in which God is present – not acknowledged by science, but not excluded either. The author refers to the newest achievements in astronomy and cosmology, quotes numerous anecdotes from the history of science, comments on the evolutionist beliefs and relates to the Intelligent Design Movement.

Inherent peculiarities of liquid molecular systems including organic ones are fluctuations of microdensity, micropolarity and other microcharacteristics of medium owing to thermal motions of molecules and their segments. In polymer and biological samples together with thermal fluctuations there also exist gradients of polarity, density, viscosity and so on, the nature of which is due to considerable spatial heterogeneity of the mentioned structures. All these characteristics may modify essentially spectral characteristics of fluorescent probes in such media and, hence, knowledge of spectral characteristics in such conditions opens the door for solving the reverse problem, namely, studying such structure features with the proper fluorescent probes that iswhy this problem is of great practical importance. Spatial and thermal fluctuations and structural heterogeneity in liquid molecular systems affect the spectral heterogeneity of fluorescence probes in solutions and biological systems.
The study of spatially heterogenic nature in biophysics become extremely important in the last decades owing to the application on a great scale of luminescence probes and labels, and due to very essential changing of structure and characteristics of biological systems in distances comparable with fluorophors sizes ~3÷6 Å. Topical interest in the study of this phenomenon in solutions as was mentioned vide infra is due to its wide applications in physics, chemistry, biology and medicine. For example, a few hundreds of molecular organic compounds for very versatile applications are described in a number of monographies (Dobretsov 1989, Lakowicz 2006), the Handbook of Molecular Probes Inc. (Haugland 2002) and on the sites of many firms such as URSA Bioscience LLC, Nanomole, it is very essential that a great number of molecular probes may be ordered commercially.
Solutions of organic molecules are used as laser media (dye lasers), light shutters, filters and Q-switchers, nonlinear transformators of light, photorefractive materials and dyes in colouration of different materials. In informatics they have found an application for data processing, cryptography and storage of information, in holography for recording holograms with extremely high density of information (multifrequency holograms). There are many important applications in chemistry as well, among them the study of intermolecular interaction, sensors of small concentrations of different chemical substances, elements and dangerous gases (Demchenko 2009). It is worth mentioning that dye solutions are severed as main objects for study characteristics of important reactions, firstly, electron and proton transfer reactions, one of the most important reactions in nature (Arnaut & Formosinho 1993, Grabowsky et al. 2003, Demchenko 2009, Tomin et al. 2015). An account of fluctuative features of reagents in photoreactions opens an avenue for a selective control of reactions as it is known that solvatochromic phenomena considerably affect their rates, efficiencies and mechanisms.
Here we have mainly collected materials from relatively new branch of spectroscopy – selective spectroscopy of organic solutions or red-edge excitation spectroscopy. The discovery at the beginning of the 80s of inhomogeneous broadening of electronic spectra of complex molecules owing to intermolecular nonspecific interactions in solid and liquid solutions gave rise to this new field (Rubinov & Tomin 1983, Nemkovich et al. 1991, Demchenko 2002).

The second Chapter (by Vladimir Tomin) is devoted to treatment heterogeneity of molecular solutions and study of charge transfer, CT, and excited state internal proton transfer, ESIPT, reactions in liquid systems. The chapter contents original classical thermodynamic approach elaborated together with the co-authors, allowing to describe the complex of new effects arising in molecular systems due to inhomogeneity of their structures. New original results in study of broadening of electronic spectra of solutes appearing in CT and ESIPT states and effects arising in such reactions at selective excitation are presented and analyzed. Importantly that selective spectroscopy opens good opportunity to select individual groups of solutes with different rates of excited state reactions and, hence, in such way one can controlsmoothly in quite wide range probabilities of such reactions. The third Chapter (by Nikolai Nemkovich) is devoted to spectroscopic study features of polar fluorescent probes in biological membranes which could be observed at selective excitation of such probes subensembles. The described studies perfomed mainly at the Institute of Physics in Belarus and in cooperation with other laboratories. The results described demonstrate that exploration of inhomogeneous spectral broadening of fluorescent polar probes in membranes allows to monitor some microcharacteristics such as, for example, polarity along the depth of membranes. Such studies and approaches are of a great importance due to a wide potential in applications of such methods in study various biological object such as blood cells and so on.
All Chapters of the monography can be readed independently. The authors of the monograph are the researchers actively working in the field of selective spectroscopy of organic and biomolecules from the earlier beginning and contributed greatly to this field. They are Professor Alexander P. Demchenko, Palladin Institute of Biochemistry of the Academy of Sciences of Ukraine, Kiev; Professor Nikolai A. Nemkovich, Stepanov Institute of Physics, National Academy of Sciences of Belarus, Minsk; Professor Vladimir I. Tomin, Institute of Physics, Pomeranian University in Słupsk, Poland (Ze Wstępu).

„Kiedy Feynman wcześnie rano został obudzony ze snu przez reportera i dowiedział się, że ma otrzymać Nagrodę Nobla, na początku nie bardzo wiedział, czy powinien się cieszyć. Pompatyczne wydarzenia były dla niego odrażające. Zastanawiał się też, co to znaczy, że komisja w dalekiej Szwecji po wielu latach uznała jego pracę za <>. Z drugiej strony Feynmanowi schlebiało, że jest w towarzystwie wielkich laureatów, takich jak: Max Planck, Albert Einstein, Niels Bohr i Paul Dirac.” Ta książka to opowieść o jednej z bardziej imponujących osobowości świata nauki XX wieku: wesołej, entuzjastycznej i niekonwencjonalnej. Nie jest to jednak kolejna biografia okraszona anegdotami z życia Feynmana. Skupia się na głównie na tym, co sam Feynman tak bardzo pokochał: fizyce!

Od końca lat osiemdziesiątych XX wieku wiadomo, że w przełomowych zastosowaniach informatyki kwantowej zmierzających do zbudowania komputera kwantowego, kluczową role odgrywają korelacji nieklasyczne pomiędzy mikroskopowymi obiektami. Korelacji te dopiero uczymy się klasyfikować i mierzyć. W niniejszej książce omówiono sposoby wykrywania i ilościowej oceny jednego z podstawowych przejawów skorelowania pomiędzy układami – splątania. Przedstawiono także miary korelacji wraz z różnymi sposobami ich definiowania, wyznaczania i oszacowania, ze szczególnych uwypukleniem roli kwantowego dyskordu opartego na teorio-informacyjnej roli entropii.

The year 2017 marks the 100th anniversary of premature death of Marian Smoluchowski, an outstanding Polish physicist, a pioneer of the kinetic theory of matter currently known as statistical physics. On this occasion, we have published the volume containing: essays on Smoluchowski’s life and his contribution to science, translations into English of Marian Smoluchowski’s papers originally published in German, French and Polish. Among them three extremely important articles have been prepared for the first time especially for this publication.

• A Contribution to the Theory of Electric Endosmosis and a Few Related Phenomena. Smoluchowski received a remarkable result in this paper. He showed that under the thin double layer assumption, the fluid flow in such phenomena is independent of boundary shape. The paper was published in 1903 in Polish and French.

• On the Kinetic Theory of the Brownian Molecular Motion and of Suspensions. The paper played a very important role in convincing scientists as to the validity of the kinetic theory of matter. This paper (published in 1906) was translated from the German original into English by Rudolf Schmitz from RWTH Aachen and Robert Jones from Queen Mary College University of London.

• Molecular-Kinetic Theory of the Opalescence of Gases in the Critical State and a Few Related Phenomena. The same two physicists translated Marian Smoluchowski’s paper on critical opalescence published in German in 1908 (French and Polish versions appeared in 1907). Explaining this mysterious phenomenon, discovered at the end of the 19th century, was at the time a great challenge for scientists.

Some of his [Marian Smoluchowski – ed. note] fundamental contributions concerned the role of statistical fluctuations in phenomena involving assemblies of particles, and confirmed their importance in explaining phenomena like the Brownian motion and opalescence. One might say that, before him, most studies were concerned with the thermodynamic variables representing the first means or expected values of the relevant random variables. Because it went further into an examination of the deviations and second moments, the work of Smoluchowski gave further confirmation to the reality of a kinetic picture of matter.

W roku 2017 upłynęło 100 lat od przedwczesnej śmierci Mariana Smoluchowskiego, wybitnego polskiego fizyka, pioniera kinetycznej teorii materii obecnie znanej jako fizyka statystyczna. Z tej okazji wydaliśmy tom zawierający: eseje o życiu Smoluchowskiego i jego wkładzie w naukę, tłumaczenia na język polski artykułów Mariana Smoluchowskiego pierwotnie wydanych w języku niemieckim, francuskim i polskim. Wśród nich znalazły się trzy niezwykle ważne artykuły przetłumaczone po raz pierwszy specjalnie do niniejszej publikacji.

• A Contribution to the Theory of Electric Endosmosis and a Few Related Phenomena. Smoluchowski uzyskał w tej pracy znakomite wyniki. Wykazał, że w takich zjawiskach, przy założeniu cienkiej warstwy podwójnej, przepływ cieczy jest niezależny od kształtu brzegu obszaru. Artykuł został opublikowany w 1903 w języku polskim i francuskim.

• On the Kinetic Theory of the Brownian Molecular Motion and of Suspensions. Artykuł (opublikowany w 1906) odegrał bardzo ważną rolę w przekonaniu naukowców o słuszności kinetycznej teorii materii. Przekładu z języka niemieckiego na angielski dokonali Rudolf Schmitz z RWTH Aachen i Robert Jones z Queen Mary College University of London.

• Molecular-Kinetic Theory of the Opalescence of Gases in the Critical State and a Few Related Phenomena. Ci sami dwaj fizycy przetłumaczyli pracę Mariana Smoluchowskiego na temat opalescencji krytycznej opublikowaną w 1908 w języku niemieckim (wersja francuska i polska pojawiły się wcześniej – w 1907). Objaśnienie tego tajemniczego zjawiska, odkrytego pod koniec XIX wieku, było wówczas wielkim wyzwaniem dla naukowców.

Książka przejrzyście ukazuje sposób powstawania meteoroidów: pierwotnych, planetoidalnych, kometarnych i utworzonych w wyniku uderzeń w planety, księżyce i planetoidy. Zawiera bardzo szczegółowy opis wszystkich typów meteorytów oraz procesy ich powstawania. Przedstawione informacje są oparte na wynikach najnowszych badań, a wnioski dobrze uzasadnione.

Obserwatorium Astrogeodynamiczne w Borówcu

Meteoryty stanowią jedyne naturalne źródło informacji o składzie drobnych ciał kosmicznych będących najbardziej pierwotną materią, z której uformowane zostały planety skaliste.
